The Navarre man who was struck by a vehicle while walking on the shoulder of U.S. Hwy 98 on July 16 has passed away, the Florida Highway Patrol confirmed late Tuesday via an updated incident report.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, 61-year-old Roger Gallon was walking on the eastbound shoulder of Hwy 98 just east of CR 399/East Bay Blvd. at around 1:40 p.m. on July 16 when a 2002 Chevy Tahoe driven by 37-year-old Ryan F. Carter of Gulf Breeze suddenly swerved and struck Gallon. According to witnesses, Carter stopped and checked on the pedestrian, but then fled the scene shortly after.
Gallon was transported to Baptist Hospital in critical condition. Police were able to track ownership of the Tahoe to find and arrest Carter on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, careless driving and failing to immediately report a crash.
According to Tuesday's FHP incident report, Gallon succumbed to his injuries on Saturday while receiving treatment at Baptist Hospital.
Further charges against Carter are now pending the completion of a traffic homicide investigation, according to the FHP.
