Due to the anticipated combination of high surf and rain, Gulf Islands National Seashore will close Fort Pickens Area to all public use effective 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 16. Campers will be evacuated by 7 p.m.
"With the projected high surf and rain overnight Friday and into the weekend, low lying sections of the Fort Pickens Road are expected to be flooded and covered with sand and water. We want to make sure that visitors and employees do not end up being trapped and unable to leave should the road become impassable,” said Superintendent Dan Brown said.
Heavy rain and flash flooding is predicted throughout the weekend. The park will inspect the road conditions late Sunday and early Monday morning and implement measures to reopen the road. The duration of the closure will be dependent on the time needed for water to recede and to remove any sand from the road surface.
