Maj. Garrett Knowlan, 34, was killed during an Oct. 11 accident while participating in Air Force Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape (SERE) training at Naval Air Station Pensacola.
According to a press release from Eglin AFB, Knowlan, the executive officer for Brig. Gen. David Harris of 96th Test Wing, was participating in the four-day course as part of a water survival course for aircrew members going to parachute-equipped airframes.
SERE includes instruction in signaling rescue aircraft, hazardous aquatic life, food and water procurement, medical aspects of water survival and life raft procedures according to the press release.
Knowlan graduated the Air Force Academy in 2002 and the USAF Test Pilot School in 2010. He left behind a wife and two young children.
The accident is currently being investigated. More information will be provided when it becomes available.
