A pedestrian attempting to cross U.S. Highway 98 on Sunday was killed when he was hit by a vehicle driving eastbound.
Clayton Burns, 31, of Fort Walton Beach, was driving eastbound on Highway 98 about 8:30 p.m. in the outside lane when Roger Smith, 67, of Gulf Breeze walked out in front of his Hyundai Elantra and hit the right front corner of the vehicle, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report.
Burns is not believed to have been under the influence of alcohol, but FHP is still investigating whether Smith was under the influence. Burns and his passenger suffered no injuries. Charges against Burns are pending.
