Baseball: Tate 4, Navarre 0

Alex Stevens pitched a complete-game shutout and Mac Siebert broke open a close game with a two-run seventh-inning blast to lead Tate to a 4-0 Florida District 1-5A high school baseball win Thursday at Navarre.

The Aggies improved to 9-6 overall, 5-3 in district games, and swept the home-and-home regular-season series with the Raiders (6-8, 2-5). Tate scored in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 win Feb. 22 at Tate.

Navarre failed to score for the first time in 2011. Its best chance came in the third, when catcher Cale Secondine drew a leadoff walk and pinch-runner Dewayne Carter stole second base and moved to third on Gavin Wehby's infield single. Carter made the inning's second out trying to score on Dusty Jones' bunt. Aggies' pitcher Stevens fielded the ball and tossed to catcher Will Schrieber for the tag. With runners at first and second, Jason Frederick popped out to second baseman Steven Trail.

Frederick doubled to lead off the sixth but Stevens fanned Justin Jordan, Devante Taylor and Chris Wheeler to get out of the inning. The Raiders threatened again in the seventh when, with one out, pinch-hitter Kyle Camilli reached on an error and Jacob Terry doubled him to third. Camilli was tagged out trying to score on a grounder by Wehby and Tate right fielder Hunter Manning made a nice running catch of Jones' line drive for the game's final out.

Brook Secondine (2-2) started and pitched seven solid innings in defeat for Navarre. He allowed four runs on four hits and four bases-on-balls and struck out four Aggies. Tate also benefited from four Raiders' errors.

Stevens allowed five hits, walked one Navarre hitter and hit one while striking out eight Raiders.

Dustin Sanders scored the only run Tate needed in the top of the third inning. He drew a leadoff walk, stole second and took third on a sacrifice line drive by Tyler Curtis before scoring on a wild pitch. The Aggies' second run came in the sixth when Hunter Manning singled to start the inning and took second when center fielder Devante Taylor misplayed the ball. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Will Schrieber and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Trail.

Manning had two of Tate's four hits. Sanders reached base safely in four appearances, walking and scoring twice and reaching safely on errors in his other two trips to the plate.

Wehby, Frederick, Jordan, Cale Secondine and Terry had Navarre's hits.

The Raiders are scheduled to host another district opponent, Pine Forest, at 6 p.m. tonight. Navarre beat the Eagles 2-1 on Feb. 25 at Pine Forest.
