Multiple-car accident causes miles of traffic on Hwy. 98

What became a five-car accident was the cause for miles of backed-up traffic on U.S. Highway 98 Thursday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred on the eastbound inside lane of Highway 98 at 6:16 a.m.

The vehicles of Kenneth Coppage, 24, of Gulf Breeze, and Gregory Salatin, 37, of Navarre, were stopped in the lane when Ian Christopher in a third vehicle did not see traffic stopping and had to stop abruptly. In a fourth vehicle, Gerald Peter Brocato, 72, of Navarre, did not stop abruptly enough, rear-ending Christopher. The force of the impact forced the Christopher into Salatin and then Salatin into Coppage. Finally, in a fifth vehicle, Tonona Valz, 20, of Navarre, was also unable to stop, hitting Brocato.

Only minor injuries were sustained by Christopher, according to the FHP media release.
