Have fireplaces and chimneys inspected by a professional yearly.

Cover your fireplace with a metal screen or glass doors to prevent sparks from causing a fire. Also, never burn gift wrapping materials or Christmas trees in it. Combustible materials should be kept at least three feet away from the fireplace.
