Naval Live Oaks Burn

During the week of May 14, there will be a prescribed burn at the Naval Live Oaks area.

The exact date and time for the prescribed burns will be determined by the weather, and will only be conducted if the weather conditions are correct.

Park officials expect the low humidity will allow for the burns to begin around 10 a.m. and end by 4p.m. on the determined burn days.

Once specific dates are determined for a prescribed burn, residents who live near the Park will be notified and a press release will be sent to local media.

Prescribed fires are conducted to minimize the risk to life, property and resources in the event of a wildfire from a lightning strike or incidental human causes.

Superintendent Dan Brown is hoping to avoid last year’s result when unpredicted fog occurred and mixed with the smoke from a night burn, resulting in Highway 98 being closed.

This year the Park will burn two small blocks – one 25-acre and one 30-acre block – which will result in less smoke and only ground ignition will be used.

“We will also benefit from the knowledge and expertise of a National Park Service Meteorologist,” said Brown, “who will assist in evaluating the forecast, including fog indices, before the burn begins.”
