Son connects with father’s WWII past

Kay Carmean, left, and Kim Carmean traveled from West Virginia to see and touch the plane Kim’s father flew in over Normandy during World War II.

A father and son connected once again at the Hurlburt Field Air Park on Dec. 28. Kim Carmean traveled from West Virginia to see and touch the C-47 that his father flew over Normandy during World War II.

More than 60 years ago, Tech. Sgt. Cletis C. Carmean was the crew chief for the C-47 that flew missions over Normandy. His son Kim grew up knowing just a little bit about his father’s time in the Army Air Corps.

“When I was younger, when we got in the car, he would put the window visor down and act like he was turning things on,” Kim said. “He didn’t talk about the war, but he didn’t shy away from it either.”
