Triclosan, a common anti-bacterial agent used in soaps, toothpastes, hand sanitizers, fabrics and plastics, has been shown to affect muscle tissue’s strength and blood flow in mice, implicating its safety and effectiveness for use in humans.
Neurotoxicologist Isaac Pessah, Ph.D., at the University Of California Davis School Of Veterinary Medicine, made the surprising discovery after researching other chemicals that can affect the nervous system.
Triclosan interferes with the way that the muscles contract, according to research Pessah published Aug. 13 in the journal “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.”
