Alzheimer’s drug shows hope, reality is in the ‘right now’

Though a breakthrough drug unveiled at a medical conference last month provided hope for those suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, the reality is that more than 5 million Americans are living with a debilitating cognitive disorder for which there is no cure.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, a new individual is diagnosed with the disease every 70 seconds. Unless something is done, by 2050, up to 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s, and a new case will be diagnosed every 33 seconds.

Florida ranks among the highest in terms of incidences of Alzheimer’s, with nearly 400,000 adults with the disorder.  By 2025, that number is expected to swell to almost 600,000.
