The students in Ann Thompson’s third-grade class are a family. From the first day of school they learn together, teach each other and support one another.
“We create a team atmosphere that allows everyone to learn in their best way and we accept the differences we have,” Thompson said. “We focus on being a family and looking for the gifts each one brings to the classroom.”
Thompson’s philosophy in the classroom has garnered local and statewide success this year when she was named Teacher of the Year. Last week she also was one of six teachers in Northwest Florida who won a Governor’s Shine Award for 2013-2014.
“It was very overwhelming and the kids were excited and it was a big celebration,” Thompson said. “But I couldn’t be Teacher of the year without the students of the year.”
