Students resurrect Titanic

Woodlawn Beach Middle School students create Titanic newspaper articles.

Seventh graders at Woodlawn Beach Middle School resurrected the Titanic for a language arts project. The students were tasked with creating a newspaper article about the Titanic, the “unsinkable” ship that went down in the north Atlantic on April 15, 1912.

Mrs. DeSalle, Ms. West and Mrs. Podojil provided their students’ assignments from each of their six time blocks (classes) to the Navarre Press to be judged.

Navarre Press News Editor Jessi Stone and Reporter Yvonne C. Harper selected the best articles from each time block. The result was 18 semi-finalist articles. Of the 18 entries, one article was selected for each teacher, and of those three finalists, the overall winner was selected. The three finalists will be announced in the Dec. 13 issue of the Navarre Press and the overall winner will be announced in the Dec. 20 issue of the Navarre Press.

The criterion used to select each winner was content, presentation, the lead sentence, the headline and how closely it resembled a newspaper article.

For the complete story and list of semi-finalists, see the Dec. 6 issue of Navarre Press or subscribe online.
