It's been nearly a month since Covenant Hospice launched a new pilot program to help children cope with the loss of a loved one and coordinator Julie Patton said so far, so good.

"The Butterfly Bag project has been something we have wanted to do for a long time," Patton said. "It may be some time before we have concrete statistics, we're just now gathering information about the initial launch but I feel like it's been a great success."

The aptly-titled Butterfly Bag program provides children – and their parents – with a variety of materials to help cope after the loss of a loved one.

The project's name signifies both the emblem on the bag itself, and the butterfly's symbolic representation as an instrument of change.
