Beach Pier opened despite county closure

Pier opened despite county closure

People brave the wind and waves Aug. 28 on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier.

Navarre Beach Fishing Pier management made the decision to re-open the gate on Aug. 28, despite an order by Santa Rosa County officials that the pier be closed on Aug. 28 until further notice as Hurricane Isaac blew through the Gulf.

On Aug. 27, pier manager Dorothy Slye was notified that the county was closing all parks, libraries and the pier on Aug. 28 due to the potential impacts of Isaac.

“A decision on whether (to) re-open on Wednesday (Aug. 29) will be made prior to noon Tuesday the 28th,” County Administrator Hunter Walker wrote in an Aug. 27 email to Slye.
