County puts horse ride request to pasture

Joy Campbell, treasurer of the Santa Rosa County Horse Assistance Council, appeared before the Santa Rosa County Commission last week with a unique fundraising idea: A horseback trail ride on Navarre Beach during the Beaches to Woodlands celebration in October.

Campbell asked commissioners for permission to use pavilions on the beach for up to 35 riders who would ride along the beach for about two hours. The fundraiser would help pay for a low-cost castration clinic for stallions. Each rider would pay a $50 entry fee.

Campbell said her group is concerned with the number of abandoned horses in the area. Her group rescues abandoned and mistreated horses, relocating them to good homes.
