County to cut Arc workers

Santa Rosa County will scrap seven disabled workers’ jobs at the end of 2010.

The Arc Santa Rosa, a nonprofit agency serving developmentally disabled clients, has provided employees for the county’s landfill and recycling center since 1990. Originally, workers sorted recyclable materials at the landfill. But their duties changed as the operation grew.

“It’s been a good agreement for these many years,” County Administrator Hunter Walker told commissioners Sept. 7, adding that the recycling center has supported itself and even made money in the past. “There’s just so much product (to be recycled) we had to change the way we use our Arc people.”
