Bicyclist succombs to injuries sustained in Sunday wreck

Terry Sims

A Navarre cyclist who was struck by a car Sunday afternoon succumbed to his injuries late Tuesday.

Terry W. Sims, 59, of Navarre, was pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital June 15 at 3:53 p.m.

On June 13, Sims was traveling westbound on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 98 on his bike around 4 p.m. when he was struck by a truck driven by Victor L. Byers, 16, also of Navarre.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Byers veered onto the shoulder, the right front of his vehicle striking the back tire of Sims’ bike.

Byers was wearing his seatbelt, and Sims was not wearing a helmet.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Byers was cited for careless driving, but further charges are pending a FHP investigation.

Sims was employed at the local Taco Bell on U.S. 98. A small memorial gathering will be held for him Saturday, June 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Taco Bell.
