Three injured in SR 87 crash

Two Navarre residents were listed in serious condition at Baptist Hospital following a two-car crash Wednesday afternoon.

Nicholas J. Mathes, 18, and Rosie Howard, 20, both of Navarre, were taken to the hospital around 12:30 p.m. June 9 after their car was struck by Kenneth R. Sloan, 50, of Holt, at the intersection of State Road 87 and Turkey Bluff Road.

Neither Mathes or Howard were wearing their seatbelts.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, Mathes was driving northbound on SR 87 when Sloan attempted to turn left onto Turkey Bluff Road, crossing Mathes’ path.

Mathes braked and his car skidded, and rotated after being struck.

Mathes’ third passenger, Coedy Ruiz, 1, of Navarre, was taken to Baptist Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Sloan faces charges of violating the right-of-way and Mathes was cited for not wearing his seatbelt.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
