Navarre mom dies in U.S. 98 wreck

A Navarre mom died Friday night, following a two-car collision on U.S. Highway 98 at Green Drive.

Eileen P. Klein, 26, of Navarre, was pronounced dead at the scene around 8:35 p.m. on June 4.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, Klein was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, Jason E. Klein, 27, when the car was struck by another, driven by Seanda R. Filek, 40, also of Navarre.

According to the release, Filek was traveling west in the westbound lane of U.S. 98, beside Klein, who was in the outside lane, to Filek’s right.

A dog walked into the path of Filek, who tried to avoid the animal by changing lanes. Filek “failed to recognize (Klein) when changing lanes,” causing the two cars to collide.

Klein steered to the right, left the road and overturned. Both Jason and Eileen were ejected.

Filek and her passengers, Andrew Filek, 6; Benjamin Filek, 4; and Joseph Filek, 9, all of Navarre, were uninjured in the crash.

Both Jason Klein and his second passenger, Riley Klein, 2, were taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola for treatment of critical and serious injuries, respectively.

Neither Jason nor Eileen was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

Charges are pending a traffic homicide investigation.
