ARGUMENTS TO BEGIN IN MATHIS INTERNET CAFE CASE
Attorneys are set to give their closing arguments in the case against a Jacksonville attorney accused of helping build up a network of storefront casinos under the guise of a veteran's charity. Judge Kenneth Lester said Wednesday's arguments will not have any time restrictions. But he also said that could mean he may hold off on giving the jury its final instructions for deliberations until Thursday.
TEEN ARRESTED IN FLORIDA IN MAIL CARRIER ROBBERY
A 14-year-old boy has been arrested in South Florida on charges of robbing a mail carrier at gunpoint. The Broward Sheriff's Office said Tuesday the boy is charged with armed robbery in the September crime in Pompano Beach. Investigators say the boy wore a mask from the movie Scream when he pointed a gun at 52-year-old mail carrier Glenn Girard and demanded his master mailbox key.
CORPS CLOSES CAMPGROUNDS, PARKS DUE TO US SHUTDOWN
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is closing all its campgrounds and parks because of the ongoing federal government shutdown. The closure begins Wednesday at noon and includes campgrounds and parks in Stuart, Moore Haven, Clewiston and Alva along waterways fed by Lake Okeechobee.
TRIAL OF TAMPA MAN ACCUSED OF TERRORISM POSTPONED
The upcoming terrorism trial of a man accused of plotting to blow up Tampa nightclubs and bay bridges has been delayed amid new concerns about his competency. U.S. District Judge Anthony Porcelli on Tuesday delayed the trial of Sami Osmakac. He was scheduled to go on trial Oct. 21 on charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and possession of an unregistered machine gun.
SOUTH FLORIDA MAN INJURED JUMPING FROM TRAIN
A South Florida man was injured after authorities say he jumped from a moving commuter train to retrieve his cell phone. Witnesses say Diaz tried to leap from the train to the platform but slipped and fell. He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
