The public is invited to join Gulfarium's Sea Turtle C.A.R.E staff in releasing a juvenile green sea turtle into the Santa Rosa Sound at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, September 11 in Navarre Beach at the Gulf Islands National Seashore.
The green sea turtle was brought to Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park just a few weeks ago after inadvertently swallowing a fisherman's line while angling off the pier beneath Brooks Bridge. Fortunately, for the 12-pound turtle, the fisherman contacted the authorities for assistance. The turtle, named Aaliyah, after the fisherman's daughter, was transported to the park and given a full evaluation from veterinarians. After a successful procedure to remove the fishing hook, Aaliyah is thriving and has demonstrated the skills required for release, such as diving and eating without assistance.
To attend the turtle release, take the bridge to Navarre Beach and turn right onto Gulf Blvd. Follow Gulf Blvd for 5 miles and park in the lot on the south side of the road. Walk north toward the Santa Rosa Sound (roughly a quarter of a mile) to the turtle release location.
