l BELAFONTE JOINS WITH FLORIDA CAPITOL PROTESTERS
Famed singer and entertainer Harry Belafonte is calling on Florida Gov. Rick Scott to listen to protesters who have been at the Capitol for nearly two weeks. Protesters upset with the verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman want Scott to call a special session so legislators can alter the state's self-defense laws. Scott has refused.
l NEW DCF HEAD WANTS REVIEW OF CHILD DEATHS
The interim secretary of the Department of Children and Families says she's deeply disturbed by recent child deaths in the state and is authorizing all necessary resources needed to conduct a thorough review as quickly as possible. In a memo Friday, Interim Secretary Esther Jacobo said a review of all child deaths involved with the agency was her top priority.
l CLEANUP STILL UNDERWAY AFTER TRAIN DERAILS
Workers continue to clean up the mess left behind when an 88-car train derailed at the Port of Tampa on Thursday morning. A rain storm delayed work for a time Thursday night and officials said it could be later Friday when the cars that toppled can be righted.
l FLORIDA BOUND JET DIVERTED AFTER TAKEOFF
A Florida-bound Delta Air flight had engine-related trouble shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport Friday morning. The pilot was able to make a safe landing at nearby Kennedy Airport. The plane was heading for Palm Beach International Airport.
