Local author Michael Byars Lewis has been recognized at the Next Generation Indie Book Awards for his first novel, “Surly Bonds.” Lewis, who is also a professional pilot, traveled to New York City recently to accept his award as a finalist in the first novel category.
“Surly Bonds” is a military thriller about Jason Conrad, a second lieutenant who is recently divorced and struggling to make it through Air Force pilot training. On the other side of the world, a former senior level KGB leader is plotting to overthrow the Russian government. Lewis said that he got the idea for the title of his novel from a poem by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
