A possible strike shutting down 15 east and Gulf Coast ports has been averted for now after the International Longshoremen and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) agreed to a 30-day extension of the master contract.
Gov. Rick Scott had called on President Barack Obama to invoke the Taft-Hartley Act to prevent a strike or lockout of 15 east and Gulf coast ports that would have negatively impacted Florida port workers and consumers, with a ripple affect nationwide and as far away as Guam.
