At its regular meeting on Dec. 9, the Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners approved a motion to impose a moratorium on permitting private construction and demolition (C&D) landfills pending adequate financial assurance for closure. Prior to the commissioners approving the motion without objective, there were discussions about the details of the moratorium.
Commissioner Bob Cole suggested a provision to account for new technology be included in the permitting process, which was discussed. County Engineer Roger Blaylock noted that new landfills must also be approved by the state, which would impose the latest requirements of the Department of Environmental Protection.
