‘We remember’

Jessica Hurd was in third grade on Sept. 11, 2001.

She doesn’t remember much, but for this cadet-commander of the Naval Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps at Navarre High School, that’s not what matters.

“What matters is honor,”  she said.  “There is a cause for other people’s actions and we need to remember that.”

Hurd joined about 150 other cadets in a special ceremony designed to honor those who perished in the attacks that day.

The ceremony, which began at dawn on Sept. 10, continued through the night until the morning of Sept. 11.

Cadets took turns reading names for each of the fallen, a process they continued until dusk on Friday.

After dark, the cadets took turns keeping watch at the foot of the flag in front of the school.
