Surviving Step by Step: Radiation and School's Out

I finished my first full week of radiation. There is not much to it when you get there. I change clothes, take my wig off (by choice), and wrap a towel around me. I get up on the table and the ladies align my body. They ask me if I'm cold. If so, a nice warm blanket is put over top of my bottom half. Feels good. It is very important that, once you are lined up, there is no movement. The radiation beams need to be exact for proper treatment.

You can hear the machine turn on and off. It also moves to different sides. Then, in a matter of minutes, you are done for the day. I usually will put some special lotion on the treated area, get dressed and then have the rest of the day to do whatever we had planned. I have 28 more to do, which will take me all the way until July 15. My big concerns are the heat, becoming tired and the redness that may appear on my skin where it’s being treated. I may be lucky enough to avoid the extremes of each. I need to stay hydrated, get good rest and stay of the sun. I hope for some rainy days.

With the children out of school it may be a little tricky. My oldest son does drive now and will be a big help. My 14-year-old could watch the youngest when it is only the two of them. There are free movies playing at the Breeze Cinemas. After that, my sister has a nice pool. I can watch the kids from her bonus room. My 14-year-old can swim well. My youngest never leaves the shallow. He can't wear any arm bands so he uses an inner tube. My neighbors plan to take them to the beach once in awhile. We always go bowling once during the summer. They always go to the church vacation Bible school. There will be plenty to do along with quiet time, reading and keeping their minds sharp. But you know what? We can't always keep them entertained. They must find stuff to do on their own. We have a nice park in our neighborhood. There are plenty of children on our street. I remember going back and forth from one house to the other. Eat here and play there. I hope you enjoy your weekend; going to be hot. My Faith will keep me strong and my Family will make me smile. Life is good.
