Raiders moving on in regional tournament

Dusty Rogers delivered a clutch two-run hit to break a scoreless tie and Matt Cronin struck out 11 in a complete-game effort as the Navarre Raiders knocked off Tallahassee Lincoln 4-1 Thursday night in a 7A regional quarterfinal at home

Rogers drilled a big hit to the outfield in the fourth inning, bringing Cyrus Grimes and Octavien Moyer across the plate to put the Raiders (20-6) ahead 2-0 . Cade Taylor drew a bases-loaded walk in the inning as well as Navarre pushed its lead to 3-0.

Micah Daniel scored the other run on a passed ball in the sixth as the Raiders advanced to play Chiles on the road Tuesday in the regional semifinal round. Navarre has won 13 in a row.

“Felt good to help out the team. To put runs on the board was a big thing,” Rogers said. “Our bond is tremendous. We have such good chemistry.”

Cronin threw with confidence throughout the night, striking out the side to close out the game. He pumped his fist as he got the last strikeout and joined his team in a quick celebration.

“It was a good feeling. I wanted to get that last batter,” Cronin said. “I love this team. We’re playing well and feel like we’re going to make a great run at state.”

Navarre head coach Scott Murphy said an all-around solid effort was the key to victory.

“Everyone works hard. They feed off one another,” Murphy said. “What won for us today is the team. This is a team sport and we have a good team.”

Charles Orth went into the pole vault competition at the Region 1-3A meet Thursday at Chiles High School confident he could earn a spot at state.

Still, the Navarre sophomore admits he surprised himself a bit with the final result.

Orth placed second at the regional with a height of 12-feet-6-inches and will compete at state Saturday at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

“I thought I had a pretty good chance. But I thought I would get fourth, not second,” Orth said. “It felt really good. I wasn’t expecting to do what I did. I was impressed with myself.”

Orth, who won the district championship earlier this month, will be making his first appearance at the state meet.

Patience, confidence key to surviving tough days during minor league season

Jesse Winker found himself in a situation every baseball player dreams about Saturday night. Bottom of the ninth inning, two outs, a runner on in a one-run game and an opportunity to deliver the game-winning hit.

Hitless in his first three at-bats against the Biloxi Shuckers, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos star crushed a ball deep to centerfield. It looked like a walk-off home run.

Instead, Kyle Wren chased the ball down and made a catch against the wall, leaving Pensacola on the short end of a 4-3 score.

Such is life during the marathon that is a minor league baseball season.

“I definitely thought it was gone,” Winker said. “I was just trying to get the barrel there and put a good swing on it. I did. Honestly, I really don’t know what happened. I thought I got it. I guess it got held up in the wind or something.”

Depth, confidence fuel Raiders’ run to regional

When Scott Murphy hosted baseball tryouts at Navarre earlier this year, he wanted to make sure he put together a team that could cash on in on its depth.

He wanted to have the luxury of mixing up his lineup week to week and not worry about the Raiders missing a beat regardless of who was playing.

“I told our coaches the guys I wanted to keep are the ones who can start at any point in time, championship game or whatever,” Murphy said. “We have a team like that. All of our guys compete hard in practice and all deserve playing time.”

Murphy’s plan has worked out well. It’s why Navarre is gearing up to host Tallahassee Lincoln in a Region 7A quarterfinal showdown today at 6 p.m.

It’s hard to say which group was more surprised last week – the players on the Niceville and Crestview teams or their fans.

Either way, neither expected the Navarre Raiders to win the District 1-7A tournament in such dramatic fashion. Navarre defeated Crestview 10-0 in six innings to win the championship Thursday night, two days after beating Niceville 9-1 in the district semifinal.

The district title is the first for Navarre since 2002 and the win propels the Raiders into Thursday’s 6 p.m. regional quarterfinal against Tallahassee Lincoln in Navarre.

Lincoln lost 9-3 to Chiles in its district tournament final last week but advances to the regional as the District 2-7A runner-up.

Navarre (19-6), normally a bump in the road for area baseball powers, was ready to go against top-seeded Niceville, which had just one district loss.

Tyler Rebber was a little rattled early, giving up a couple of hits that put Crestview in a position to strike first against Navarre in the District 1-7A championship game Thursday night in Navarre.

But Rebber never lost his confidence, and not only did he get the job done on the mound, but he also provided the early offensive spark for the Raiders.

Rebber drilled a big hit to the outfield in the fourth inning., bringing Michael Sandle across the plate for a 1-0 lead and the Raiders rode that momentum to a 10-0, six-inning victory over the Bulldogs. It’s the first district title for Navarre since 2002.

The Raiders have won 13 in a row and play Tallahassee Lincoln Thursday in Navarre in the regional quarterfinal round. Game time has yet to be announced.

“It takes me time to get used to the batters, but once I do, I’m fine,” Rebber said.

As for the big hit, well, Rebber was thrilled he could deliver in a clutch moment,

“I love being the spark and the passion that comes with playing this game. This win was a statement to everyone who was watching.”

The Raiders led 3-0 after four innings and owned a 6-0 lead through five innings.

“It feels great to win this game,” Navarre head coach Scott Murphy said. “We expected it. We have a chance to keep playing. We’re five wins away from one of our other goals.”

High school sports bill could create ‘free agency market’

Florida, known as a springboard for pro and college athletes, may soon overhaul how high school athletics work in the state, including making changes to eligibility and even who oversees competitions.

A Florida House on Wednesday passed a sweeping bill that backers say would help students wanting to compete in high school sports. A version of the legislation is moving in the state Senate, although two years ago senators scuttled a similar bill.

But critics contend the legislation would essentially open the door for schools to recruit student athletes to switch schools. They say the bill is being pushed by legislators upset with the Florida High School Athletics Association — the Gainesville-based governing body that oversees competitions in dozens of sports including football and basketball.

The bill (HB 7137) will make it easier for students to take classes at one school but participate in sports at another school and it would also make it harder to prove that a student is ineligible to compete.

It also makes changes to how eligibility disputes are handled, places limit on the fees charged by the association, changes how the nonprofit organization works and sets up a process that could lead to Florida stripping responsibilities from the group.

Rep. Manny Diaz, a Miami Republican, contended the bill was not a “witch hunt” against the current association, but during debate defended the bill by saying that the rules that high school athletes must follow now were archaic and didn’t reflect the education options now available in the state.

“If parents have the choice of making a decision on their child’s education, we should not stop those children from participating,” said Diaz. “At the end of the day let’s bring it back to the kids.”

Rep. Kevin Rader, a Delray Beach Democrat, contended that the bill was drawn by “disgruntled” legislators and change how schools approach athletics in the state. He said that even though thousands of student athletes participate in the state only a handful of eligibility cases ever go through the existing process.

“When you have a bill that is going to create this free agency market, this allowing of student athletes, kids, to pick their coach, to choose where they want to go to school, it is just wrong,” Rader said during debate on the floor.

Parents, friends and fans gathered at the girls’ weightlifting banquet Monday to honor the team for winning another state weightlifting championship.

After winning the championship two years ago and placing second in 2014, only two medal winners returned for the 2015 season.

Despite the challenges, the Raiders were ready and took 17 lifters to state. They won the championship in convincing fashion, scoring 39 points.

Three Raiders – Kylie Shelley, Nicole Thornton and Taelor Smith – won individual state titles. For Shelley, it was her second consecutive title.

Cameron Mayweather has come a long way with his dedication during his high school football career. It paid off last week when he signed a letter of intent with Moorpark College in California.

“My work ethic was my biggest improvement,” Mayweather said. “I didn’t work as hard when I was a freshman, but with the help of our strength and conditioning coach (Garrett Bagley), I built a great work ethic and became a lot faster and stronger.”

Mayweather was hoping to sign with a college earlier this year but it didn’t work out. Still, he never lost faith and believed the right opportunity would eventually present itself.

Moorpark is a junior college that plays in the Southern California Football Association.
