Larry Rolison knows exactly who the customers at his new restaurant, Ye Olde Brothers Brewery, will be. They will have an affinity for craft beer and great food. They will appreciate the quality, vintage appeal of the restaurant which features colonial lighting, Spanish Saltillo tile floors and rocking chairs lining the wrap around porch.

“We’re going to take it slow and make it what the customers want,” Rolison said of the business philosophy.

At first they will offer other craft beers locals have come to love like those from McGuire’s Irish Pub and Sweetwater Brewery Company.

They will also have their own house versions of an IPA, a Porter, a stout, and a Bass Ale. And once they’re really rolling, Rolison hopes to also have bread ales and specialties like pumpkin ales. He also plans to invite local craft beer brewers to come up with their own recipes.

Rolison hopes to cultivate a regular, local customer base when they open in January.

“There are several so far that have a lot of spicy flavor,” Nathan Kozakiewicz said, adding that he doesn’t have any regional preferences that some chili-lovers have. “I’m just looking for chili that is spicy with bold flavor.”

Locals hovered over 22 crockpots, each featuring a different texture, smell and taste. Though laughter and chatter filled the space during the two-hour tasting, the cook-off was not just for fun.

The 22 cooks were competing for first place in several categories including Bean There Farted That, Carnivore Amore, Fowl Chili, Double Burner and, the crown jewel, People’s Choice.

Navarre could have captured their third straight District 2-6A crown with a victory over Choctaw last Friday night, but instead, they will have to wait until Halloween to learn their fate in the district race.

The Raiders need a victory by Fort Walton Beach over Choctaw on Oct. 31 to have a shot at the title. The most likely scenario is an Indian win over the 1-7 Vikings and a runner-up finish for the Raiders.

Navarre was their own worst enemy in the 25-15 loss to Choctaw at Joe Etheredge Stadium. The Raiders committed four turnovers on the night, three fumbles and an interception, and were guilty of 10 penalties for 95 yards.

Be aware of dog: Pit bulls claim October for awareness

October is pit bull awareness month. Depending on whom you ask however, what you should be aware of is changes.

“We need Pit Bull Awareness Month because the media has done a wonderful job of villainizing them,” said Carrie Turner, who runs

Phoenix Rising Rescue, the only licensed pit bull rescue organization in the area. “The facts people think they know about this breed are so inaccurate; pit bull awareness helps to understand the real nature of the breed.”

But what are the facts? Most people have heard that pit bulls rank high in dog-bite fatalities, which they do. However, advocates say pit bulls are a very popular breed, are most likely to draw “bad owners” and are often misidentified by media and bystander reports.

According to Turner, they are also more likely to be abused.

“I went to a breed-specific rescue because 90 percent of calls I received were about pit bulls being misused and abused,” Turner said, adding that she has several dogs shipped each month from Miami that have been abused including those used as yard dogs, guard dogs and fighting dogs.

Just a few miles down the road from the 14th annual Navarre Beach Car & Truck show, a new event had its inaugural celebration at Navarre Park. On a sunny October day, more than 300 people turned out to see what Joyfest was all about.

Joyfest, organized by Navarre businesswoman Julie Condon and members of her prayer group, along with many volunteers, was an all-day event that featured worship, prayer, music and fellowship for the Christian community.

“This is a great way to come together as brothers and sisters in Christ and kind of let down our denominational walls,” said Ricky Lee Phelps, pastor of Word and Grace Ministries of Florida. Phelps sang during the seven-hour event which featured a number of church worship teams throughout the day.

Nearly a dozen churches pitched a tent along the park’s sidewalk as well, giving passerby a “one stop shop” to browse the area’s churches, ministries and more.

Navy veteran Dennis Del Rosario is the newest member of the Midway Fire District after he was sworn in at the Oct. 14 meeting.

Rosario was joined by his wife, Donna, one of his sons, his parents, and several firefighters when he took his oath Tuesday night.

Rosario was hired to fill a vacancy created when Hunter Lawson, a U.S. Air Force reservist, deployed last month. Lawson’s position is funded by a grant that requires it to be filled by a veteran, Midway Fire Chief Jonathan Kanzigg said.

“We’ve known Dennis for a while,” Kanzigg said. “He went to our fire academy years ago. He was a Navy veteran. He’s been working at the Pace Fire Department since 2009. So he does bring some experience to the table coming to us.”

Holley resident Donna Harvell is a doting grandmother who spoke out on social media because she wants her grandchildren to have a playground nearby. She soon discovered hundreds of neighbors share her vision, so Harvell started a petition for improvements at Holley Ball Park.

She drove the signed petition to Milton to ask county commissioners to fund improvements at their Oct. 9 meeting. She presented a proposal for a playground and other improvements, including bleachers, lighting, picnic tables and a pavilion.
