Sparked by another round of changes to the state’s grading formula, the number of top-rated high schools in Florida dropped dramatically this year.

The Florida Department of Education Dec. 18 released new figures for 2014 that showed 60 schools across the state lost the coveted A grade, including Navarre High School. Last year nearly half of the state’s high schools had an A grade, while this year only 36 percent had the top mark. More than 500 schools were graded.

As a result of fewer A-rated schools, the number of schools given a B grade edged up from 30 percent to 35 percent, and the number of schools with a C grade jumped up as well.

When Austin Anderson visited Disney World last year, he never thought the trip would lead to an award-winning science fair project. Like any kid, he was there to have fun.

But the behind-the-scenes tour sparked an idea that stayed with Anderson and eventually earned him the Biological Sciences Grand Award at the annual Holley-Navarre Middle School Science Fair.

The seventh-grader said he wanted to find out if plants planted in hydroponic soil had better growth.

For the past couple of weeks, some Navarre High School students have learned practical, real-world financial advice thanks to a new program offered through Junior Achievement.

Last year Junior Achievement of Northwest Florida reached 5,694 students in 303 schools throughout the panhandle. For the first time, the organization is providing a course at Navarre High School – courtesy of a Navarre business owner.

Junior Achievement volunteer Steve Clark, who also serves on the organization’s board of directors, is teaching a five-week course in personal finance to students in Amanda Bishop’s diversified cooperative training classes.

“The students have been very receptive. They’re paying attention,” Clark said. “The subject matter is somewhat intriguing to them.”

Jackie Pratscher hasn’t had her name on a billboard since she won a speech contest in fifth grade. Today, more than 15 years later, her name is displayed on the board outside of Holley-Navarre Intermediate School honoring her as the school’s Teacher of the Year.

When the principal called her name, Pratscher said she “ugly cried” as she made her way to the front of the room.

“I’m a crier, but I really ugly cried,” the fifth-grade teacher said. “I couldn’t even talk. I wanted to say something, but I was overwhelmed.

“It’s the most special gift,” she said. “I do it for the kids, not anyone else, and when your peers recognize you, I’m stunned and shocked and still haven’t found the way to explain it.”

She’s one of those people who doesn’t have an off switch – which serves her well as a seventh-grade civics teacher.

“We’re up against video games, and besides jumping through a burning hoop,” Kesterson Hall said, “you have to know how to keep it fun.”

Kesterson Hall was recently named Teacher of the Year at Holley-Navarre Middle School. She’ll compete against 32 teachers for the countywide title.

Fundraiser underway for ‘Library Lounge’

The Navarre High School Library is raising funds through a new program to create a “Library Lounge,” which will include comfortable chairs and cafe-style tables.

“We are very limited in fund raisers for the high school library,” NHS librarian Pat Bannister said. “Budgets have been cut over the years, so I have had to stretch what we were allotted.”

The fundraiser is an online book fair. When an item is purchased using the library’s code, the library will receive 30 percent of the purchase price. The library hopes students and parents will participate in the fair for themselves and for holiday shopping.

The book fair will offer more than 200,000 titles through the childrensbookstore.com. Raiders can enter the code Raider14 at check out to help their library.

Thirteen percent of 18- to 20-year-olds who were involved in an automobile crash admitted they were sending or receiving text messages, according to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute. The institute also found text messaging increased the risk for crashes by 23 percent.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 3,328 people were killed in 2012 due to a distracted driver, while 421,000 were injured. One in five crashes involved distracted driving. Experts say teenagers are at an increased risk due to a lack of experience; they have the highest rate of distracted driving-related fatal crashes.

Students at Navarre High School learned firsthand about the dangers of texting while driving when the Unite Arrive Alive Tour visited during the Beach Bowl football game Nov. 7.
