It’s a different approach. Instead of dividing, one classroom at Holley Navarre Primary is multiplying. As of Oct. 8, a few lucky kindergartners got the opportunity to learn from two teachers in one classroom. “It’s really a win-win situation for the children,” Principal Barbara Scott said. “It provides more one-on-one and more small group instruction for the students.” Read more in the […]

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. National averages say one in three students are bullied during the course of the school year. What may have once been considered a “rite of passage” is now a serious cause for concern for parents facing what seems like
a new world of school violence and youth suicide.

According to stopbullying. gov, bullying rates have not necessarily increased, though awareness has.

David Gunter, Santa Rosa County School District (SRCSD) Director of Middle Schools, agreed with those numbers.

“We are starting to see a decline in the incidents rates, fewer bully incidents and fewer discipline incident across that particular spectrum,” Gunter said, adding that middle schools see the highest numbers for bullying, followed by the high schools.

“As a precautionary measure we are requiring that all students identified with this infection have a release from their doctor to return to school” said Principal David Sigurnjak, who says about six or seven students had the infection. “We are also requiring all safety precautions to eliminate the spread of this infection,” added Sigurnjak.

“Students have really looked at the change as a privilege and they are really kind of self-monitoring (cell phones),” David Gunter, Santa Rosa County School District (SRCSD) Director of Middle Schools, said.

Earlier this year, SRCSD implemented a new policy for cellphone usage that allows students to use the devices during “transition” time but not during instructional time. Gunter said students correct other students on using the devices now. He also said principals have reported to him the halls and lunch rooms are quieter as a result.

“A lot of the issues they had as far as the noise levels have improved. The students are now on the cell phone so instead of talking face to face, they are sending text messages.”

County schools have experienced skyrocketing growth in the 2014-2015 school year. The district has enrolled 691 more students than they originally projected. In Navarre, that means schools are working a game of student/teacher tetris in order to meet requirements laid out by the state.
