Florida nabs No. 2 rank in nation for business

Business NewsFlorida came in second behind Texas as the state with the best business climate in America. The results came from a triennial survey given to hundreds of business executives and conducted by Development Counsellors International, a firm specializing in all phases of economic development and travel marketing.

Local economist Rick Harper, Ph.D. of the University of West Florida said the number 2 ranking will attract businesses outside of
our typical industries.

“For our local region, this includes sectors such as finance, insurance and real estate, where we expect to see substantial growth via
firms such as Navy Federal Credit Union,” Harper said.

“I expect to see total jobs in the Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa three-county area grow by a cumulative 3.8%, or about 11,000 jobs, over the 2014 – 2020 period, which is somewhat slower than growth in the state or the nation,” Harper said, adding that the health care and social assistance sector should add the most jobs, about 3,400.

with the scope of the law.

James Giattina, Director of Water Protection Division for the southeast branch of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), was in Navarre Friday, Oct. 3, and discussed how far upstream the EPA’s jurisdiction goes.

“For so many years we have been so water rich in the Southeast that we really do take it for granted. And those days are coming to an end,” Giattina said, citing interstate conflicts, groundwater depletion, and decreasing surface water as problem areas.

5 Things to Know in Florida for Sept. 19

Your daily look at news, upcoming events and the stories that will be talked about today.

FLORIDA’S NEW UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS DUE OUT

New numbers are due out that could show whether or not Florida’s unemployment rate continues to remain stagnant. The jobless rate in July was 6.2 percent. That’s the same rate it has been for much of the year. The state’s rate is slightly higher than the U.S. rate. Florida in July had nearly 600,000 people out of work. Economists say the rate has remained flat in 2014 because people are re-entering the job market due to an improving economy.

US SEEKS PRISON SENTENCE CUT FOR HOUSE CANDIDATE

5 Things to Know in FloridaFederal prosecutors want a judge to reduce the prison sentence for a former U.S. House candidate who pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations in a case linked to Republican ex-Rep. David Rivera. A hearing is scheduled Friday for Justin Sternad, who prosecutors say deserves credit for cooperating extensively in the Rivera investigation. Sternad was initially sentenced to seven months after pleading guilty to several charges.

FLORIDA SUPREME COURT TO HEAR CASE ON SECRET EVIDENCE

The Florida Supreme Court is holding a hearing on whether secret evidence should have been used in a landmark trial on redistricting. A judge earlier this year ruled that state legislators broke the law in 2012 when drawing up a new map for Congress. Part of that decision was based on emails and documents taken from a Gainesville political consulting firm. The evidence was heard at the trial, but it was kept from the public under a previous court order.

OCALA POLICE OFFICER TO GET BODY CAMERAS

All Ocala police officers will soon wear cameras on their uniforms. Police Chief Greg Graham says the cameras will improve city policing by making interactions between officers and the public more transparent. Right now motorcycle officers are wearing the cameras, but a unanimous vote by the City Council approved funding to buy more for the entire force.

ORLANDO MAN CHARGED WITH HUMAN TRAFFICKING

Police say a 75-year-old central Florida man ran a human trafficking ring by recruiting women prisoners and then using them as prostitutes once they were released from prison. State and local authorities say Richard Rawles recruited female prisoners from the Lowell Correctional Institution State Prison for Women in Ocala. Once they were released, Rawles took them to Orlando, where he forced them to work as prostitutes.

The situation is complicated. Beach chair and umbrella vendors operate on Navarre Beach under a “gentlemen’s agreement” of sorts which allows them to work directly with beach property and condo owners with oversight of the county.

That unofficial way of doing business leaves county officials no real way to deal with complaints or issues that arise including unauthorized solicitors or overcrowding umbrellas.

Sales Tax Holiday Helps Florida Families

A tax free weekend Sept. 19 through Sept. 21 will save consumers on items new Energy Star and WaterSense products including dishwashers, refrigerators, room air conditioners, swimming pool pumps, sink faucets and showerheads.

“Floridians will get a final opportunity to shop tax-free this weekend, as part of the nearly $500 million tax cut passed by the Legislature and signed by Governor Scott this year. Beginning on Friday, September 19th, and lasting until September 21st, taxpayers will save their hard-earned dollars on the first $1500 of an energy efficient appliance purchase thanks to the sales tax holiday,” said Dominic M. Calabro, President and CEO of Florida TaxWatch.

“This sales tax holiday is a great way to provide broad based tax relief for Florida families and retirees, while promoting conservation and environmentally friendly purchases that will help Florida retain its natural beauty and maintain our limited state resources,” he said.

Savings will also be available through Gulf Power’s EarthCents rebate program that can refund customers anywhere from $25 to $250 on items like water heaters, washers and freezers.
