Future business leaders shine at Amazing Shake

It was an introvert’s worst nightmare.

In the words of Woodlawn Beach Middle School’s Dean of Students Jeff Baugus, the second annual Amazing Shake contest was an awkward sell to teenagers. The event tested student’s soft skills in business through a series of speed-dating-style mini interviews in which they practiced their handshakes, eye contact, confidence and conversational skills.

“Teenage communication is much different than adult communication,” Baugus said. “It’s not that they couldn’t do it, they just have never had to.”

The famous saying by Lao Tzu, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step,” adorns the walls of one of Navarre’s newest businesses: the Navarre Pregnancy Resource Center.

The center is a satellite office of the Fort Walton Beach-based nonprofit, LIFE, Inc. (Life Is For Everyone) which describes its mission as providing an alternative to women seeking an abortion.

LIFE provides educational resources and referrals to medical providers if necessary. The organization also works with Heartbeat International to provide “Earn While You Learn” training on pregnancy and caring for a newborn in exchange for clothing, diapers and other nursery items.

Santa Rosa’s industrial business boom

Santa Rosa County recently released its 2014 annual report highlighting the county’s successes, and those related to economic development stand out.

A drive through Santa Rosa County Industrial Park also underscores the triumphs of the county’s economic development office (EDO) during the past few years under the leadership of Director Shannon Ogletree, who assumed his current role after the county’s former economic development arm, TEAM Santa Rosa, was disbanded by commissioners in 2012 and reorganized into a county department.

The county’s annual report details new tenants recruited to the county’s industrial park in 2014, including Capitol Material, TPR, Navy Federal Credit Union and Goldring Gulf Distributing. The new industries have added hundreds of jobs to the local economy.

Hotelier gets six-month extension

Marilyn Hess, president of Holi Corp, successfully advocated county commissioners Jan. 22 for a six-month extension to start construction of a $30-million hotel on Navarre Beach.

Although Holi Corp originally requested a spot on the board’s agenda to request mortgaging the future hotel in the name of TIN, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Holi Corp, Santa Rosa County Commissioners Jan. 20 also discussed issuing a notice of default since a June 23 agreement with the county required construction start by mid-January.

“I feel someone wanted to threaten us in a non-business friendly manner,” Hess said, telling commissioners they need to be pro-economic development.

“Communication goes both ways. You could have let us know,” Commission Chairman Don Salter replied. “Don’t point your finger at us.”

Florida nabs No. 2 rank in nation for business

Business NewsFlorida came in second behind Texas as the state with the best business climate in America. The results came from a triennial survey given to hundreds of business executives and conducted by Development Counsellors International, a firm specializing in all phases of economic development and travel marketing.

Local economist Rick Harper, Ph.D. of the University of West Florida said the number 2 ranking will attract businesses outside of
our typical industries.

“For our local region, this includes sectors such as finance, insurance and real estate, where we expect to see substantial growth via
firms such as Navy Federal Credit Union,” Harper said.

“I expect to see total jobs in the Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa three-county area grow by a cumulative 3.8%, or about 11,000 jobs, over the 2014 – 2020 period, which is somewhat slower than growth in the state or the nation,” Harper said, adding that the health care and social assistance sector should add the most jobs, about 3,400.
