NICKELED (BUT NOT DIMED): MINIMUM WAGE UP 5 CENTS IN FLORIDA

State officials have announced that the wage will rise Jan. 1 in Florida from $8.05 to $8.10 an hour. Florida law requires the state to annually calculate the rate based on increases in the federal Consumer Price Index. Groups representing workers have decried the small wage hike as “trivial.” They say it’s not enough to keep up with the cost of living in Florida’s urban areas.

HURRICANE NICOLE PUSHES SEA TURTLES BACK TO FLORIDA BEACHES

Brevard Zoo sea turtle program coordinator Melanie Stadler says the loggerhead and green turtles are 1 month or 2 months old. The turtles had been feeding on sargassum seaweed about 30 miles off the Brevard County coast when large swells generated by the hurricane pushed them back to the beach.

MAN GETS 20 YEARS FOR SHOOTING AT GEORGE ZIMMERMAN’S VEHICLE

The sentencing hearing Monday morning, Zimmerman said 38-year-old Matthew Apperson showed no regard for human life during the May 2015 confrontation, and even seemed joyful because he mistakenly thought he’d killed Zimmerman. Zimmerman is the former neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted of second-degree murder after fatally shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012.

FLORIDA UPS DRIVER FINDS HOMICIDE VICTIM ON A FRONT LAWN

Palm Beach County sheriff’s spokeswoman Therese Barbera said the driver spotted 63-year-old David Middleton lying in front of a house in a neighborhood near the Town of Jupiter. The driver called 911. Paramedics responded and pronounced Middleton dead. Detectives determined the death was a homicide.

2 DIVERS’ BODIES RECOVERED IN ‘DANGEROUS AND COMPLEX’ CAVES

Rescue divers located the bodies in 260 feet of water in the Eagle’s Nest diver area in Weeki Wachee, according to an email from Hernando County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Denise Moloney. She says Justin Blakely told deputies Sunday night that his two friends, Patrick Peacock and Chris Rittenmeyer, had traveled from Fort Lauderdale to dive with him. Blakely said both were experienced divers and familiar with the caves.
