Spoofing used in exploitation of senior citizens

No state has a larger elderly population in the nation than Florida.

More than 4.9 million residents are 60 years of age or older, accounting for 24 percent of the state’s population, and scam artists are eager to exploit it.

“Exploitation and fraud is one of the biggest categories of abuse against elders,” said Ashley Chambers, the director of the office of communications for the Department of Elder Affairs in Florida.

Scams aren’t new but they are always evolving.

One of the latest involves spoofing, which is where the caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to the caller ID display to disguise his or her identity.

“They utilize a computer to make the call appear to be from an 850 area code even though they are from out of the country,” said Sergeant Rich Aloy, the public information officer for the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. “We have even received these calls on Sheriff’s Office phones.”

Spoofing is used in a variety of scams, including one in which it appears as if the call is coming from the Department of Elder Affairs.
