Taylor thrives in more prominent role on defense

Cade Taylor finds himself in a much different role on the Navarre football team this season.

Limited to a backup position at safety a year ago, mainly seeing the field on special teams, the junior is now a starting linebacker for the Raiders.

“I have to step up a lot more this year and make more plays,” Taylor said. I’m in a much bigger role.”

Taylor has thrived in that role, racking up more than 20 tackles to go along with four sacks.

“I just try to fly around on defense and have the right mindset,” Taylor said. “The coaches talk to us about being positive and being motivated. We practice hard and that pays off on the field.”

Taylor said offseason conditioning has been instrumental to his success, noting the improvements he has made in his speed and strength.

“I had a good summer and put in a lot of work. It’s showing in the way I have played,” Taylor said.”

Taylor has always loved the game of football. His dad, Greg, is the defensive coordinator for the Raiders and he said when Cade was a youth football player, he stepped back and watched the game as a father rather than stand on the sidelines as a coach.

Now, the two have no choice but to be on the sidelines together, something Greg calls an interesting dynamic. Cade has gotten used to it.
