Unbeaten Raiders drop a spot in latest AP poll

It’s a new month and Navarre’s football team has a new position in the 6A Associated Press poll.

But it’s not where you would expect the Raiders (5-0) to be. Despite holding off Pace 42-28 Friday night in their District 2-6A opener, they fell to No. 8. They were ranked seventh a week ago.

Niceville slipped in the poll as well, falling from eighth to ninth despite rolling to a 42-0 win over Fort Walton Beach Friday night.

Mainland (6-0) is the new No. 1 team in the state, receiving 14 first-place votes. Ocala Vanguard (5-0) got one vote and is ranked second this week. Defending state champion Miami Central (5-1) fell from first to fifth but did pick up one first-place vote.

Navarre has won its last 17 games in the regular season — a streak that dates back to the 2014 season — and has rolled up more than 1,500 yards of offense this year, the majority of it coming off the strength of its running attack. The Raiders are led by North Carolina commit Michael Carter, who has rushed for 730 yards and has scored 17 touchdowns, including 16 on the ground. He has also thrown for a TD this season.

The Raiders have allowed 30 or more points only once and opponents and have given up just 12 plays of 25 yards or more. Bo Hering leads the defense with 47 tackles. Josh Carter is second on the team in tackles with 40.

Navarre is back in action Friday when it travels to Escambia to take on the Gators in a 7:30 p.m. non-district showdown at Emmitt Smith Field.
