US Highway 98 expansion details in works

The Florida Department of Transportation is going to expand U.S. Highway 98 to three lanes on each side, but the details are still in the works.

That’s what Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization Citizen’s Advisory Committee member Ralph Agnew said during his Friday, Sept. 16, presentation to the Economic Development and Government Affairs Committee of the Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce.

Agnew explained that the FDOT has a list of projects that are prioritized to determine which ones get funding first. According to the FDOT’s traffic counts, parts of U.S. Highway 98 were more than 5,000 vehicles over their max capacity in 2015.

Agnew said U.S. Highway 98 is high on the priority list.

The presentation gave a public forum for Navarre citizens to discuss the project with the chamber ahead of public input meetings with FDOT. The committee ended the meeting with voting on a united opinion to bring to the meetings.

“We opened this committee to the public because this is just too important,” Chamber President/CEO Judy Morehead said.
