Adults get refresher in U.S. politics

Navarre residents got a crash course in citizenship and the Constitution Tuesday, Sept. 6, during Adult Civics Class at Holley-Navarre Middle School.

Civics teachers Ashley Hall, Pam Rose and Brandon Czubinski are collaborating to instruct the free five-week course.

The class is designed to give adults a refresher on the topics Navarre’s middle-schoolers learn about the nation’s government and laws.

“In civics class back when I was a kid, you did the worksheets, you learned the vocab and that was it,” Czubinski said. “I was never taught why it’s important. We grew up with this apathetic attitude toward it that was ‘meh, it’s America.’”

Hall echoed that.

“It boils down to wanting to raise that civic-minded spirit again,” she said.

At Tuesday’s class the teachers defined citizenship and what rights are guaranteed under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. During the first class, the participants were asked to take a naturalization test, the test that those wishing to become U.S. citizens must pass.

The class did not do so well.
