Busy Labor Day weekend despite weather

Despite dwindling attendance along the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricane Hermine, Navarre Beach bed-tax collectors reported maxed out occupancy for the three-day Labor Day weekend.

As CNBC warned travelers to rethink their Florida travel plans, hotels in Panama City Beach reported high cancellations due to the storm and discounted rates to recapture those visitors, but Summerwind Resort General Manager Petra Fransis said although she considered running discounts, she did not need to.

“I did not run any specials,” she said. “We were going to, but didn’t need to because we did not have anybody call to cancel. Actually we had a higher occupancy now than we did last year. Not by much, but it was a little better.”

Her property was at about 98 percent occupancy, an improvement over last year’s reservation numbers.

And Summerwind Resort was not alone.

Best Western’s Front Desk Agent Allen Collinsworth reported similar occupancy and no cancellations.
