Argos roll to win in historic first game

History was made Saturday for the University of West Florida football team as it won its first game in program history.

The Argonauts dominated on both sides of the ball against Ave Maria in a 45-0 win, rolling up 500 yards of offense and holding the Gyrenes to 105 yards in a game delayed a little over two hours by a storm.

Tim Bellinger paved the way for the Argos, rushing for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Week for his efforts.

Kaleb Nobles, a transfer from Valdosta State, started at quarterback and threw for 235 yards and a pair of scores. He was 21-of-29 on the day.

Bellinger scored the first TD in school history on a 1-yard run in the second quarter. Nobles threw a TD pass to Caleb Robinson seven minutes later to stretch the lead to 14-0.

The Argos led 14-0 at halftime before putting the game out of reach in the second half.

Four players finished with five or more tackles, including Martes Taylor, who led the way with six.

Next up for the Argos is their home opener against Missouri S&T Saturday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The Miners come to town fresh off a 62-14 win over Bacone.
