Milton and county seek courthouse tax alternatives

Searching for support on the proposed local-option sales tax to build a new downtown Milton courthouse, city leaders ponied up $5,000 for a mass mailing to voters as time ran short before this week’s election.

But even before the ballots were counted, Milton’s city council and some paid officials started strategizing to cope with the defeat that came on Tuesday night.

Santa Rosa County voters turned away the proposed half-penny sales tax for the courthouse by 800 votes out of roughly 31,300 cast–51.3 percent to 48.7 percent.

Voters singled out the courthouse funding for defeat while supporting the ballot’s other half-penny tax aimed at paying for a variety of infrastructure around the county.
