Mike Hill cleared in tax probe

State Rep. Mike Hill’s homestead exemption claim has been found lawful in an investigation by Escambia County Property Appraiser Chris Jones.

Jones launched the probe based on an anonymous tip questioning whether Hill is entitled to a $50,000 exemption on his Pensacola house while leasing a condominium on Pensacola Beach and splitting his time between the two residences.

The tip came during the home stretch of Hill’s bid for a Florida Senate seat in which he’s running against fellow Republican Doug Broxson.

Jones released a statement on Thursday that said: Representative Hill and his wife recently responded to requests of the ECPA for the additional information necessary to review the homestead tax exemption of their property. Their response included affidavits of Representative Hill, his wife, and their daughter, correspondence from their legal counsel, and an application for homestead tax exemption submitted by Greta Hill. The application included the permanent residency information for Ms. Hill as required under section 196.015, Florida Statutes (2016).

Based upon review of the additional information, the ECPA concludes that the homestead tax exemption of the property complies with Florida law based upon the permanent resident status of Greta Hill, as specified in section 196.031, Florida Statutes (2016).

This matter is now concluded.
