Harry and Evelyn built a marriage that lasts

Harry Adams said he wouldn’t trade his wife for anything in the world.

Evelyn, his wife of 77 years, quickly chimes in with a pretty funny response.

“Well you couldn’t now, not in the shape you are in,” Evelyn said with a laugh. “You are stuck with me.”

That lighter moment offers a glimpse into the relationship the couple has forged in nearly eight decades together, a relationship that began when the beauty of Evelyn caught the attention of Harry.

“She was standing on the corner and I looked over and see this girl with blonde, beautiful hair. She is pretty and I wondered what she was doing,” Harry said. “I got up the nerve to go over and ask her what she was doing and she said she was waiting for her girlfriend and her girlfriend’s boyfriend. I figured, ‘gee if she doesn’t have (a boyfriend), I have a chance.’”

Harry was 18 at the time and Evelyn was 16. They began dating and two years later they ran off to get married in Indiana on Aug. 21, 1939.
