Recycling service coming soon to Santa Rosa

The Emerald Coast Utilities Authority is nearing completion of the $10.6 million Interim Materials Recycling Facility according to ECUA Spokesperson Nathalie Bowers.  “We are on the homestretch on the construction,” she said.

“We will be hosting a kick-off event on August 22, then for the next few weeks we will be fine-tuning the operation.  Hopefully around the beginning of September we will begin receiving materials,” Bowers said.

Santa Rosa County’s Director of Environmental Services, Ron Hixson says Santa Rosa County is ready.  “We are ready to send them materials as soon as they are up and running.”

ECUA broke ground on the facility in mid-February.  The IMRF encompasses a 53,460 square-foot fabric building with recycling equipment that is expected to process up to 165 tons of materials per day.  The project was initiated to offer a long-term, regional recycling solution for the community, while assisting Escambia County in reaching its state-mandated 75 percent recycling goal.

The kick-off ceremony will be held to mark the opening of the ECUA’s facility at 9 a.m. on August 22 at the Escambia County Perdido Landfill.
