Welcome to Navarre sign mysteriously missing

If you have driven down southbound Highway 87 coming into Navarre in the past two weeks, you may have noticed something is missing.

The brightly painted “Welcome to Navarre” sign is gone, and neither county officials nor Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce (NBACOC) members know where it went or who may have taken it.

The sign was initially installed Sept. 30, 2014, by Kool Breeze in front of an abandoned and graffiti-covered gas station, but locals’ protests got the county to relocate the sign to beside the East River Boat Ramp where it resided for about nine months.

Although the project was spearheaded through the NBACOC, the sign’s $3,700 price tag was split between the chamber and the county, and the county made the final decision on where the sign was placed.

The idea was to create a landmark visitors would associate with Navarre.
