STATE SEN. DON GAETZ APPLIES TO BE UWF PRESIDENT

Media outlets in the Florida Panhandle report that the Niceville Republican is among more than 70 applicants for the job. Gaetz is serving his second term in the Florida Senate and faces term limits in November. He served as Senate president from 2013-2014. He currently chairs the Senate’s budget subcommittee on education, which includes funding for universities, state colleges and public schools.

HOSPITAL SHOOTER IN FLORIDA FORMALLY CHARGED WITH MURDER

The state attorney’s office says a Brevard County grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday charging 29-year-old David Owens with two counts of first-degree murder. Titusville police say Owens entered Parrish Medical Center last month and fatally shot 92-year-old patient Cynthia Zingsheim and Carrie Rouzer, a hospital-affiliated sitter who was attending to Zingsheim in her room.

FUGITIVE ON THE RUN FOR 26 YEARS CAPTURED IN FLORIDA

Hialeah police told reporters that 66-year-old Anibal Mustelier was arrested Monday on armed robbery, grand theft and other charges in connection with a string of jewelry store robberies. Mustelier has been sought by the FBI, U.S. Marshals Service and other agencies on robbery, extortion and other charges. Authorities say Mustelier is believed to have worked as contract killer in Cuba and was implicated in attempted assassinations in the 1980s.

EX-U OF MIAMI OFFICIAL GETS 3+ YEARS PRISON FOR EMBEZZLEMENT

Federal prosecutors said Tuesday in a news release that 58-year-old Kimberly Jean Miller was sentenced after previously pleaded guilty to four counts of tax evasion. She was finance director from 2002 to 2012 at Miami’s Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

ALLIGATOR HUNTING SEASON OPENS IN FLORIDA

Records show 6,000 hunters received permits to kill up to two alligators. The season began Monday night and runs until Nov. 1. Hunters work primarily at night and use harpoons, spear guns, fishing rods or crossbows to control the alligator and then kill it with a knife into the spinal cord or use bang stick to shoot it in the head.
