Parents shell out hundreds for back to school

Back-to-school shoppers are set to spend $27.3 billion on their K-12 students nationwide according to the National Retail Federation’s annual back-to-school report, a nearly $4 billion increase over last year.

In Navarre, parents can expect to spend between $55-$101 on school supplies alone for their grade schoolers plus anywhere between $10 and $40 for a backpack to carry it in.

Asking any parent, you are likely to get the response that back to school shopping hurts the wallet, but 2016 is set to top every year’s spending since the spike in 2012 by billions.

The NRF reports this is the second-largest spending season for consumers, and roughly $674 will be spent per household on back to school this year.

But Navarre mother of two Darla Thole said that number is low for her. She says her total will be closer to $1,000.
