Sea turtle rescued by trawler returns to Gulf

Dozens of beach visitors gathered around to watch Harriet the rehabilitated sea turtle’s return to the Gulf of Mexico Thursday, July 14 on Opal Beach.

Harriet, as the loggerhead sea turtle has been nicknamed, is the sea turtle equivalent of a teenager, still too young to begin breeding. Although the gender of the turtle is a little unclear at this age, the length of the tail indicates it is most likely a female.

Harriet was one of 209 sea turtles relocated by turtle trawlers during the beach renourishment.
