Raider volleyball players dedicated to improvement

Michelle Lee didn’t have much time to get a summer workout program in place last year because she was hired in July.

But it’s different this summer. Lee watches closely and provides instruction as players work on hitting, passing and setting inside the Navarre High School gymnasium.

She is encouraged by the effort her players are putting forth and thrilled so many of the players aspiring to make the team this fall have shown up for the workouts.

“Just the girls being here shows dedication,” Lee said. “For them to choose to be here two hours a day, four times a week, speaks volumes to me.”

Training in the summer is vital to success during the season and the Raiders are eager to be a much better team than they were a year ago when they won only five games.

“It’s very important and a lot of the girls I’ve never seen before,” Lee said. “They come from different programs and some haven’t touched a ball since last season. Some are playing beach volleyball, which is a huge difference in game play. The workouts bring the players together and help them get in a groove and help them get used to everything and to each other before the season begins.”

Lee said eight players are back from a year ago and their experience is valuable.

“It’s always nice to have girls who are used to my coaching technique and what it’s like to be part of my team,” Lee said. “It makes it easy transitioning into the new season because they know our style of offense and defense, and they have been a big help to the younger players.”

The Raiders are counting on solid play at the net to fuel their success.
