Bioblitz, a science-fantastic hit for all ages

It didn’t take long for the interest in science to be generated at the inaugural Bioblitz May 21 at Naval Live Oaks, which is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore.

“Right before the start, we had a broadhead Gecko sitting there and everyone just started taking pictures,” said Susan Teel, the Chief of Resource Education at Gulf Islands National Seashore. “It didn’t move the entire time.”

The moment offered the roughly 800 participants an early glimpse of nature before they headed out to act as citizen scientists on a variety of surveys that featured everything

With around 800 participants and a ton of science excitement generated, the first Bioblitz at Gulf Islands National Seashore was a huge success.

“Things went really well,” Teel said. “All of the visitors, the scientists and the exhibitors who came out had an awesome time. We had people from every age group and they came from all over Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties.”
